To be exact...Harrigan Cove is located at
44°55'37"N, 62°17'54"W in the Musquodoboit/Sheet
Harbour region of the Marine Drive, Halifax county.
In terms you can understand however, Harrigan Cove is located approximately 80 miles
(128 km) Northeast of Halifax
along highway 7 (the Marine Highway). It is a small village now although it was
once home to large lumber mills and even a gold mine. Today it is mostly
just a
collection of homes - old and new - watching over the Atlantic Ocean's
relentless approach to land. Our new home sits on about 14 acres
of land and faces one of many small coves found along the coast. The land is heavily forested with
spruce and in the midst of all that sits a comfortable home that was
built over the years by the previous owners. Due to health, the
most recent owners, a German couple, have returned to Germany and apparently, their loss is our
gain.
I began looking at property in Nova Scotia back in 2004 after
first seeing some property listed on eBay. I energized my sister
who is an interior designer and tired of life in Los Angeles to look
there. In turn, she purchased a home and property near Digby, Nova
Scotia late last year.
While I was primarily focused on the Annapolis Valley region (nearer to
my sister) I ended up falling for the little house in Harrigan Cove.
We finally flew up in March of 2005 and landed at Halifax International Airport
amidst
about six centimeters of fresh snow. The night-time drive, in
falling snow, made for an interesting trip to the hotel in Halifax.
Earlier, as we were flying in from New York,
my wife began to
have second thoughts about the whole "Canada" thing until the following day when she
first saw the house. It was, as they say, love at first sight.
While Harrigan Cove is very small, the nearest town of any size is located
only fifteen minutes south.
Sheet Harbour, so named because of a
large flat rock formation at the entrance of the harbour that sailors
and fisherman said looked like a sheet flapping in the wind, offers
shopping, banking, restaurants, hardware stores and the local RCMP
station. I did notice that Halifax had both a Costco and a Home
Depot Store and with those, our life is nearly complete :-)
The stretch of road connecting Harrington Cove, Sheet Harbour and
Halifax is called the Marine Highway. It's a stretch of scenic
roadway rich in both culture and abundant with many
things of interest to see and do. Go to
www.highway7.com
and take the tour of the shoreline.
Nova Scotia is a fascinating and beautiful place and we hope to make
many new friends and live a wonderful life sharing the bounty of Canada.

agencies to consider. Bob Harris acted as both the buyer and
seller's agent on the home we bought. I've found him to be honest and a
font of knowledge about the area and the people.
